To achieve this, KIOF encourages a holistic approach to the farming system that includes such factors as choice of crops, soil tillage techniques, composting, planting systems, crop storage, animal care and welfare, ecological crop protection, soil and water conservation, agro-forestry, bee keeping and human bio medicines. The institute also promotes ecological tourism and balanced human livestock rearing and nutrition.
We maintain demonstration centers in several counties of the former Eastern, Central and Rift Valley Provinces. KIOF works with NGOs, government departments and research organizations in this initiative. The institute has published several books on smallholder organic farming practices (Field notes on Organic Farming, Njoroge 1990, 1994; Organic Farming: A textbook on post-secondary education, Njoroge and Manu, 1999.)
The training of farmers in organic farming is both theoretical and practical.
